Heinrich Schwabe (* 25. October 1789 in Dessau , † 11. April 1875 ) was a sustained-dessauischer , German astronomer and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Schwabe ".

Life

Schwabe left school in 1806 to become a pharmacist . From 1809 he studied pharmacy , chemistry , botany and physics in Berlin . In 1811 he returned to Dessau to take over his grandfather's pharmacy . After the pharmacy was sold in 1829, Schwabe devoted himself exclusively to the natural sciences. From 1830 he lived in the Schwabehaus .

In 1825 he began to be interested in astronomy . In 1843 he discovered the eleven-year sunspot periodicity, but at that time assumed a period of ten years. The Schwabe cycle was named after him. Alexander von Humboldt became aware of him through his publications and visited Schwabe in his observatory in 1833 .

In 1838 he published Flora Anhaltina , a comprehensive work on the flora of his home country Anhalt . His herbarium with plants from his trips abroad and from the Dessau parks is also remarkable .

In 1841 he married Ernestine Amalie Moldenhauer.

In 1857 he received the gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society . In 1868 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society . The moon crater Schwabe is named after him.
