The Schwabehaus , located at Johannisstraße 18 in the Neustadt of Dessau , was built by the carpenter Wilhelm Corte in 1826. The astronomer Samuel Heinrich Schwabe lived here from 1830 , who discovered the 11-year periodicity of sunspots in 1843 .

After years of dilapidation, the building was renovated in the 1990s and has been under the management of the “Schwabehaus e. V. “mixed commercial and non-profit, primarily used for cultural purposes. The neighboring house at Johannisstrasse 17, which was acquired by the association in 2007, the “old bakery” built at the beginning of the 19th century, has also been restored and given a new use.
