Hilario Ascasubi

Hilario Ascasubi (born January 14, 1807 in Bell Ville , Cordoba Province , † November 17, 1875 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentinian writer.

Life

Hilario Ascasubi was the son of the merchant Mariano Ascasubi and his wife Loreta de Elía. He was born on the wagon his mother took to her wedding in Buenos Aires.

Under Juan Manuel de Rosas , Ascasubi fought against the Spaniards after the May Revolution in the War of Independence. He then went into exile in Uruguay and settled in Montevideo . There he ran a bakery. During this time most of his literary works were created under the pseudonym Paulino Lucero. His main work is Santos Vega y Los mellizo de La flor (Santos Vega and the Flor Twins), a verse tale about a “courageous, macho, thick-headed gaucho” Hilario Ascasubi is one of the main exponents of the gaucho idealizing gaucho literature .

At the age of 68, Hilario Ascasubi died on November 17, 1875 in Buenos Aires, where he found his final resting place.
