Hans-Otto Dill (born July 4, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German professor of Romance studies , writer and translator .

Life

Dill attended a high school in Anklam . After graduating from high school in 1954, he studied Romance studies at the Romance Studies Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB) in the philological subjects of French , Italian and Romanian . His academic teachers included Professors Rita Schober , Victor Klemperer , Horst Heintze , Johannes Klare , Kurt Baldinger and Auguste Cornu . In 1959 he completed his studies with the state examination in French, Italian and Romanian literature and the diploma on the interrelationships between German and French classical literature.

From 1959 to 1961, Dill worked as an editor and translator for the General German News Agency (ADN).

In addition to French, Italian and Romanian, which are part of his studies, he also learned Spanish and Portuguese on a self-taught basis.

From 1961 to 1962 he was a research assistant for literary studies at the Romance Institute of the HUB. In 1963 he completed postgraduate studies at the University of Havana (10 months).

In the period 1964–1968 he completed an apprenticeship at the Romanisches Institut der HUB, and in 1969 Dill received his doctorate. phil. The doctorate was supervised by Rita Schober and dealt with modern Cuban poetry. In 1971 he received his teaching qualification ( facultas docendi ) at the HUB.

From 1970 to 1974 he worked as senior assistant in the subject of Latin American literatures and scientific secretary in the German and foreign language philologies section at the HUB.

In the seventies to the middle of the eighties, Dill, in addition to his academic career, published extensively Latin American and especially Spanish-language literature and translated many of these works (novels and poetry) into German and edited them with literary commentaries.

In 1975 he was appointed university lecturer for Cuban literature at the HUB, and in the same year he received his habilitation as a Dr. sc. phil. This work was devoted to 19th and 20th century Latin American literature. He received his appointment as professor with chair for Latin American literatures at the HUB in 1981.

In the years 1988–1990 Dill held a full professorship at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . During this time he was on leave from the HUB.

Between 1991 and 1992 he was the first elected managing director of the Institute for Romance Studies at the HUB. From 1992 he went into early retirement and until 1994 worked as a lecturer for Latin American literatures at the Institute for Romance Studies at the HUB.

Visiting professorships

Dill was visiting professor at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) in 1990 and at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina) in 1994 .

In 1995 he was a lecturer at the University of Göttingen and until 2006 a lecturer at the University of Hamburg .

In the years 1985-2019 he held various guest lectureships and congress visits at universities and academies, among others in Spain (Madrid, Seville, Barcelona), in Mexico (Verazcruz, Mexico City, Guadalajara), in Argentina (Buenos Aires, La Plata), in Chile (Santiago de Chile, Valparaìso), in Peru (Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo, Tumbes), in Bulgaria (Sofia), in the Czech Republic (Prague), in Cuba (Havana, Santiago de Cuba), in Italy (Rome, Catania , Siracusa) and Macedonia (Skopje).

Research priorities

Originally, Dill devoted himself to research in French and Italian literature, then Ibero-American / Latin American literature.

In connection with his teaching activities, he also focused on cultural-historical aspects of the development of literature in the languages ​​and countries he studied. For young scientists and selected students, he held special events on cultural-theoretical topics. Among the participants were Dorothee Röseberg , Irene Skotnicki, Hans-Joachim Gießmann, Roberto Ampuero and Carlos Cerda (Chilean writers in exile and aspirants at the chair for Latin American literature).

This expansion of the subject of research extended Dill to large projects. In June 1988 he and his professor colleague Klaus Meyer-Minnemann (University of Hamburg) initiated a joint research project on Latin American literature by Romance scholars from both German states at a literary Romance studies congress on the problem of realism at the HUB.

This project was funded by the GDR Ministry of Higher and Technical Education and the Ministry of Culture of the State of Lower Saxony in 1989 as an all-German project on the topic of "Appropriating Reality in Hispano-American Novels in the 19th and 20th Centuries". It was the only all-German research project in this field.

From the GDR side, this project included the Humboldt University in Berlin (Hans-Otto Dill and his doctoral students Sabine Harmuth, Carola Gründler, Olaf Niepolt) and the University of Rostock (Ano Ring). From the West German side, it was the Georg-August University of Göttingen with his Romance specialist colleague Manfred Engelbert , the Catholic University of Eichstätt ( Ottmar Ette , later professor at the University of Potsdam ), the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main (Karsten Garscha), the university Hamburg (Klaus Meyer-Minnemann), the University of Bremen (Martin Franzbach) and the West German doctoral candidates: Katharina Niemeyer (later professor at the University of Cologne ), Inke Gunia (later professor at the University of Hamburg ) and Sabine Schlickers (later professor at the University of Bremen ) , also Hans Paschen ( University of Stuttgart ) and Karin Hopfe ( Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main ).

The project, which ended in 1993, was financed by the Volkswagen Foundation in Hanover. This financing included all working meetings in the participating university cities, the field research trips to Latin America and Spain, and the publication costs of the anthology by Vervuert Verlag (Frankfurt am Main).

In the years 2000 to 2006, Dill devoted himself particularly to philosophical areas that touch upon literary and linguistic problem areas. And from 2006 onwards his academic interest has been primarily in the German and French Enlightenment and problems of globalization in cultural and philosophical areas, including especially the work of Alexander von Humboldt .

Offices and memberships

Since 1995 Dill has been a member of the Leibniz Society for Science in Berlin . From 2009 to 2017 he was secretary of the social sciences and humanities class and a member of the executive committee. Kerstin Störl was elected as his successor in this office .

In 1998 he became a member of the Berlin Latin America Forum, where he was a member of the Presidium and Vice President from 2000 to 2005, and he continues to be a member of the association.

In 2000, Dill was a founding member of the Friends of the Ibero-American Institute of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin and is still a member today.
