Kerstin Störl (born June 24, 1958 in Zwickau ) is a German Romance philologist (linguistics) , active as a university professor for Romance languages ​​and regional studies at the Institute for Romance Studies at the University of Vienna , Austria .

She teaches, researches and publishes on linguistics , Romance studies , Latin American studies , ancient American studies as well as cultural studies and communication studies . She has designed a cognitive approach to language contact research and works on cognitive-contact linguistic questions, which she analyzes using the example of language contact between Spanish and Quechua. She regularly conducts field research in the Cuzco region ( Peru ) and works in an interdisciplinary manner, taking into account selected philosophical and psychological aspects.

She is the initiator and co-editor of the two book series "Languages, Societies and Cultures in Latin America" ​​and "Style: Creativity - Variation - Comparison" at the science publisher Peter Lang, Berlin.

Career

Kerstin Störl was born in Zwickau in Saxony , her parents were Ruth Störl, b. Glöckner, and Rudolf Störl. After graduating from high school in 1977, she began studying language mediation (translation and interpreting) for Spanish and English at the Romance Studies section of the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB). Her academic teachers included Hans-Dieter Paufler , Johannes Klare and Hans-Otto Dill . From 1979 to 1980 she was studying at the University of Havana in Cuba . In 1981 she received her university degree from the HUB and her first academic degree as a language mediator .

From 1981 to 1984 she completed a research course at the same university in preparation for a doctorate on the subject of "A method of studying the linguistic forms of expressing time in Spanish", for which she received the doctorate Doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.) For the field of Acquired Spanish language (1984).

Her professional activity began in 1984 as a research assistant to the professor for Spanish linguistics at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Hans-Dieter Paufler.

In 1985 their daughter was born in Berlin.

Kerstin Störl wrote her habilitation on the subject of "The development of the expression of causality in Spanish". For this work as well as the scientific discussion on the subject of "Philosophy and literary language in the French Enlightenment", the HUB awarded her the qualification to teach Romance Philology (linguistics) in 1996. Thus she achieved the status of a private lecturer . After her habilitation, Kerstin Störl held numerous visiting and substitute professorships in Romance languages ​​and general linguistics, which she was given at the following universities: Humboldt University of Berlin (2000 and 2012 to 2013), Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (2002 to 2003), Technical University of Berlin (2004 to 2011), University of Rostock (2005 to 2008), University of Paderborn (2013 to 2014). She headed the Romance Linguistics department at the Technical University of Berlin for seven years.

Since 2018, Kerstin Störl has been university professor for Romance languages ​​and regional studies at the University of Vienna in Austria. As part of this activity, she was appointed director of the Institute for Romance Studies, which has around 100 employees. At the same time, she is still a private lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Kerstin Störl teaches, researches and publishes on Romance philology, linguistics, Latin American studies, ancient American studies as well as cultural and communication studies. The main areas of work were and are: cognitive linguistics, onomasiological grammar (temporality, causality, personality), contact linguistics, variety linguistics (Spanish in Cuba and Peru, French in Cameroon), historical and diachronic linguistics (linguistic history, historical technical languages, French philosophy and literary language in the 17th and 18th centuries) . / 18th century), verbal and non-verbal communication, cultural studies and intercultural communication.

She is the initiator and co-editor of two book series at the Wissenschaftsverlag Peter Lang, Berlin:

• “Languages, Societies and Cultures in Latin America”, founded in 2001 together with Germán de Granda, Universidad de Valladolid (Spain). Since his death, she has edited the series together with Rodolfo Cerrón-Palomino, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú, Lima (since 2011).
• “Style: Creativity - Variation - Comparison”, founded in 2003 and published together with Volker Fuchs , Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald. From 2006 Sonja Kleinke , University of Heidelberg, joined as third editor.

She researches the cultural variability of mental representations, which she investigates in terms of cultural specifics in the Andean region. As part of this cognitive-linguistic project, she works in an interdisciplinary manner with references to selected philosophical and psychological aspects. In this context, she designed a new, cognitive, approach to language contact research.

Kerstin Störl is internationally known for her numerous scientific lectures and cooperative relationships, especially with the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima , the Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad de Cuzco, Perú, the Centro de Estudios Regionales Andinos "Bartolomé de Las Casas", Cuzco , Perú, the Instituto Boliviano de Lexicografía y otros estudios lingüísticos, Bolivia, and with the Universidad de San Simón in Cochabamba, Bolivia . The fruitful cooperation with the universities of Yaounde I, Dschang and Buea in Cameroon began with a student excursion, which she organized and carried out in 2008, as well as a lecture tour in 2009. She maintained further scientific contacts to Brazil , France , Cuba , Colombia , Mauritius and Spain .

Research priorities

In her research focus "Cultural variability of mental representations - investigation of cultural specifics in the Andean region as well as their verbal and non-verbal means of expression", Kerstin Störl takes a Romance-ethno-linguistic approach, combined with methods of cognitive linguistics, with an interdisciplinary focus on intercultural communication, psychology, philosophy and ancient American studies . The language contacts between Spanish and Quechua play a special role. To this end, she has carried out targeted field research in the Cuzco region (Peru) since 2010 and collaborated with colleagues from the Universidad Católica de Lima and the Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad de Cuzco.

Partial results of this research have been published (Störl 2016a, 2016b, 2019c, see also 2019a). Your theoretical innovation for contact linguistics presented therein is the consideration of language contact on a conceptual level, i.e. the cognitive interrelations between culturally variable concepts are analyzed as the starting point for contact between linguistic forms.

Part of the project is the “International Networking Workshop” (2019) on the subject of “Embodiment and Representation” at the University of Vienna, which Kerstin Störl grants in collaboration with the Leibniz Society's “Mental Representations” working group, which she founded in 2018 Berlin organized. To this end, she invited linguists, philosophers, psychologists, anthropologists and cultural scientists to discuss the interdisciplinary aspects of the topic.

Offices and memberships

In 2012, at the suggestion of the literary scholar and philosopher Hans-Otto Dill , Kerstin Störl was elected to the interdisciplinary learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin (LS). In 2016 she was elected as the deputy class secretary in the LS and in 2017 as the secretary of the “Social Sciences and Humanities” class, taking over the office from the long-time owner Hans-Otto Dill and at the same time becoming a member of the executive committee. In 2017 she organized the annual conference of the Leibniz Society as an interdisciplinary scientific conference on the topic of "Migration and Interculturality", as a contribution to the support and reflection of the immigration of numerous refugees.

Kerstin Störl has been a member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin since 2012 , where she was elected secretary for the “Social and Human Sciences” class in 2017 and thus became a member of the Presidium. In 2018, Kerstin Störl founded the "Mental Representations" working group, whose focus is on creating interdisciplinary relationships between linguistics, philosophy, psychology, neurology, cultural studies and anthropology, which are to be checked against a large number of different culturally specific phenomena, including those outside of Europe.

Since 2013 Kerstin Störl has been working in the Quechua research group "Rimasqa Rimana" at the Free University of Berlin, which is headed by Teresa Valiente Catter. Since 2014 she has been a member of the “Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas em Metalexicografia e Lexicografia” of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She is still a member of the Latin America Forum Berlin, where she was Vice President from 2012 to 2013 , and she is a member of the Romanist Association and the Hispanic Association .

Kerstin Störl is the acting head of the department “Diversity and Hybridity in the Context of Culture, Language and Communication” at the Technical University of Berlin, Institute for Language and Communication, Department of Communication Studies.
