Ole Mørk Sandvik (born May 9, 1875 in Helgøya , † August 5, 1976 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian folk song collector, music researcher and teacher.

Life

Sandvik grew up in Hamar, where he attended school until 1893. After that he began studying at the University of Kristiania . In the summer of 1895 he passed the teaching exams at the Hamar seminary and then taught at the elementary school in Florø and the public school in Hamar. From 1897 to 1902 he studied theology. He then taught at Vestheim grammar school until 1913 and at Hegdehaugen skole , the Oslo municipal grammar school, until 1945 . From 1916 to 1945 he also taught liturgical and church singing at the practical theological seminary at the University of Oslo.

Sandvik has been involved in Norwegian folk music since the early 1910s, with the assistance of the poet and folk song collector Olav Aukrust . Through the violinist Ivar Bråtå he got to know many old folk tunes in 1915-16, which were the main material for his book Folkemusikk i Gudbrandsdalen . His dissertation from 1921 was entitled Norsk folkemusik, særlig Østlandsmusikken . In 1927 he founded the Norwegian music collection in the University Library of Oslo.

From 1923 to 1936, Sandvik was secretary of the Norwegian Choral Books Committee, from 1932 to 1958 he edited the yearbooks of the Norwegian Music Critics Society ( Norsk samfunn for musikkgranskning ). In addition, he was chairman of the church association for the diocese of Oslo from 1933 to 1948. In 1974 he became vice-president of the International Folk Music Council , and from 1948 to 1965 he was director of the Norsk Folkemusikklag . In 1939 he became a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . In 1949 he was appointed knight 1st class of the Order of Saint Olav , in 1965 with the Fridtjof Nansens Belønning and in 1966 with honorary membership in the Landslaget for Spelemenn .
