Edmond Paul Joseph Tranin (* 1895 in Marle ; † in the 20th century ) was a French journalist .

Life

Edmond Tranin came from Marle in northern France. He married Claude Téry, a daughter of the prominent journalist couple Gustave Téry and Andrée Viollis . Tranin worked as a journalist for the Paris daily Le Petit Parisien in the 1920s . When he was traveling in an airship with two other men in 1923 , he had to land in Ennigerloh in the German Reich because of a storm . Due to the hostile reaction of the local population, the men were placed under German police protection for five days before they were able to return to France.

For the Petit Parisien , Edmond Tranin undertook the Tranin-Duverne mission, which lasted several months, from 1924 to 1925 . It was the first west-east crossing of Africa from the Atlantic to the Red Sea by motor vehicle . Tranins travel companion was Gustave Duverne , a fighter pilot of the First World War . The expedition was financed by the automobile manufacturer Rolland-Pilain . After his return, Tranin reported on his trip in the Petit Parisien and gave a lecture at the Société de Géographie . He was honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honor for his achievement in 1925 . His detailed travel description of the Tranin-Duverne mission was published in book form in 1926 under the title Sur le dixième parallèle . The popular reporter Tranin is said to have been a role model for the fictional reporter Tintin , the title hero of the comic series by Hergé first published in 1929 . In the album Tintin au Congo, Tintin is also on the road in Africa in an automobile.

Edmond Tranin subsequently made a name for himself with political texts. In 1928 he published an article in Grautoff's Deutsch-Französischer Rundschau in which he advocated colonial cooperation between the German Empire and France. In 1931 the magazine Vu published his critical report from the Soviet Union on political prisoners deported to Siberia . In his youth novel, written together with Georges Le Fèvre , On the Trail of Douha , Tranin described the journey of youthful heroes across Africa. The novel, which is largely kept in a documentary-encyclopedic tone, reflects the realignment of French colonialism since the Brazzaville Conference , even if the paternalistic undertones are unmistakable. In 1953 produced the short documentary Les Forceurs de banquise about icebreakers in the Baltic Sea , Tranin was responsible for the concept and direction.

He settled in the municipality of Pléneuf-Val-André in Brittany , where he became a member of the municipal council and campaigned for the local tidal island Îlot du Verdelet to be declared a bird sanctuary in 1973.
