Albert Victor Eugène Brenet (born June 25, 1903 in Harfleur , Département Seine-Inférieure , † July 4, 2005 in Paris ) was a French painter .

Life

Born in the Le Havre region, Albert Brenet drew the merchant ships that docked at the port of Le Havre as a child. Albert Brenet - an average student with a keen passion for drawing - began studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1920 . There he received training as an animal painter and was active in this profession until the late 1920s .

In 1929 Brenet came on board one of the last trading sailing ships, the Bonchamp, where he not only discovered the fascination and the hustle and bustle of the ports during the subsequent seven-month voyage to the West Indies , but also discovered life on board without electricity and Had to arrange running water.

This trip shaped his further career as a painter decisively. Brenet created sketches, oil paintings , gouaches of ports, ships and their crews. Brenet also achieved notoriety through his posters for transatlantic airlines.

Brenet, who was appointed Peintre Officiel de la Marine in 1936 , was the first to hold the titles Peintre Officiel de la Marine, Peintre de l'Air, obtained in 1936, and Peintre de l'Armée de terre, obtained in 1959. Along with Marin-Marie , whom he met in 1931, and Roger Chapelet, Albert Brenet is one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century.
