Hermann Delago (born April 2, 1875 in Rietz , † December 9, 1962 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian mountaineer and guide author.

Life

The Delago family comes from Bulla (Lad. Bula, It. Bulla) near Ortisei in the outer Val Gardena . In the last quarter of the 19th century Josef Delago emigrated to Rietz im Oberinntal , where his son Hermann was born.

From 1889 to 1893 Hermann Delago was an apprentice printer in Innsbruck. Already during this time he was mostly alone in search of new tours and made numerous first ascents, such as the Sonnenwand in Sellrain (1894). In 1895 he moved to Brixen , where he found a job with the Catholic press association. On September 22, 1895, Hermann Delago was the first to climb the most difficult of the three vajolet towers in the Rosengarten in the Dolomites , which has been named after him ever since. In 1896 he also climbed the Murfreidturm single-handedly. In 1907 he climbed together with Paul Mayr and A. Schmid on the Langkofeleck , where a chimney exit bears his name. From 1900 to 1910 he worked as a printer in Munich, Stuttgart and Passau. In 1911 he returned to Innsbruck, where he worked as a machine setter for the Tyrolia publishing house until he retired in 1940.

In 1956 he was made an honorary member of the Austrian Alpine Club , and in 1962 the South Tyrolean Alpine Club . In addition to the numerous pioneering alpine achievements, Hermann Delago is best known for his Dolomites hiking book, which was published in numerous editions until 1983. Hermann-Delago-Strasse in Bruneck is named after him.
