Guido Alberto Fano (born May 18, 1875 in Padua , † August 14, 1961 in Tauriano di Spilimbergo ) was an Italian composer, conductor and pianist.

Life

Fano began his musical training at the age of nine with Vittorio Orefice . From the age of sixteen to nineteen he was a piano student of Cesare Pollini . In 1894 he went to Bologna and studied at the Liceo Musicale piano, composition and conducting with Giuseppe Martucci , harmony, counterpoint and fugue with Cesare Dall'Olio and music history and aesthetics with Luigi Torchi .

In 1897 he went on a study trip to Germany, where he also met Richard Strauss . In 1900 he took part in the International Rubinstein Competition in Vienna, where he received a special mention for the Fantasy for Piano , the Sonata for Piano and Violoncello and the Andante e Allegro con fuoco for Piano and Orchestra.

In 1905 Fano became director of the Parma Conservatory. He also worked as an opera conductor in Parma and Reggio Emilia between 1906 and 1908 and performed Die Walküre , Lohengrin and Parsifal , Aida and La traviata , among others . From 1912 to 1916 he was director of the Naples Conservatory, after which he worked as a conductor in Palermo.

In 1922 Fano became a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Milan. Due to the Italian race laws , he lost the job in 1938. He spent the war years with his family in hiding in Fossombrone and Assisi and returned to the Milan Conservatory in 1945, where he taught until his death in 1961.

In addition to songs (based on texts by Boccaccio, Heine, Lamartine, Pascoli, D'Annunzio, Carducci) and piano works, Fano has composed chamber music, church music, orchestral works and two musical dramas.
