Theodor Barth (painter)

Theodor Barth (born March 9, 1875 in Beggingen ; † August 26, 1949 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss painter , graphic artist , draftsman and illustrator .

Life

Barth's father Theodor Barth-Imhoof was a pastor at the Theodorskirche and Matthäuskirche in Basel . Barth spent his youth in Zofingen and attended grammar school in Basel. He then studied chemistry and wrote his doctoral thesis on alchemy . For the next seven years he worked as a chemist in Holland, France and Switzerland.

Married to Hermine Barth-Jundt, Barth decided to give up his job and to pursue a career as an artist. From 1904 to 1908 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Heinrich Knirr , Ludwig von Löfftz and Peter Halm and graduated there a. a. Friendship with Albert Welti , Ernst Kreidolf and Wilhelm Balmer .

In 1914 he settled in Basel and worked for three years as a secretary at the Kunsthaus Zürich . Barth lived and worked on Rittergasse in Basel, Beckenried , Schwyz , Meggen and Uttwil .

In 1932 he moved to Lucerne, where he worked until his death. His oeuvre is shaped by lithographs , portraits, still lifes and cityscapes.

Theodor Barth was a cousin of the theologian Karl Barth . From 1901 onwards, through his sister Johanna, he was related by marriage to the theologian Rudolf Liechtenhan .
