Georg Weinrich (also: Georg Weinreich or Georg Weindrich; * April 23, 1554 in Hirschberg / Silesia; † January 27, 1617 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Georg was the son of the citizen in Hirschberg Balthasar Weinrich and his wife Magdalena Fries. Four brothers, Thomas, Martin, Johann and Melchior, come from this marriage. From 1558 he attended school in his hometown. In 1572 he came to the Marien-Magdalena Gymnasium in Breslau. In Breslau he also became the private tutor of Prince Georg auf Kupferberg, with whose three sons he traveled to Bohemia in 1575 to learn the local language. When he returned to Breslau, he was given another private tutor position. He and his pupil moved to the University of Leipzig on February 4, 1579, and in March 1580 became a baccalaurus of philosophy. After a short stay in Prague from 1581, he returned to the Leipzig University in the winter semester of 1582/83, where he received his master's degree in philosophical sciences. After a short stay as Tertius at the electoral state school St. Augustin in Grimma , he received an appointment as a deacon in Langensalza in September 1584 , which position he took on after his ordination on October 6, 1584. On September 12, 1586, he changed to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig as a subdeacon , rose there on January 1, 1589 to the position of deacon and in 1592 became a pastor there.

Weinrich had acquired the baccalaureate in theology on November 28, 1594 and, after the departure of superintendent Wolfgang Harder, took over the superintendent of Leipzig and the pastor's office at the St. Nikolaikirche in the same year . Associated with this, he was also appointed assessor at the Leipzig Consistory . In the same year he was given a theological professorship at the University of Leipzig . With this he became a canon in Zeitz . On January 20, 1597, he acquired the paper Problema theologicum de sacramento initiaitonis contra Calvinianos the licentiate in theology and he received his doctorate with the work Problema theologicum de sacramento baptisimi, continens explicationem status controversiae inter Lutheranos et Cinglianos on November 8, 1599 Doctor of Theology.

Also in November 1599 he became a full third professor in the theological faculty and, associated with it, a member of the women's college . In 1604 he rose to the second theological professorship and was associated with canons in Meißen and Decemvir . Finally, on March 9, 1614, he reached the first theological professorship in Leipzig, at the same time he was its senior and senior of the Polish and Silesian nation. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the university. So he was in the years 1601 (winter-sem.), 1605 (winter-sem.), 1607 (winter-sem.), 1610 (summer-sem.), 1613 (winter-sem.) and 1615 (summer semester) dean of the theological faculty. In the winter semester of 1600 he was the rector of the Alma Mater and in 1605 he was the procurator of the Alma Mater. Georg Weinrich died in Leipzig on January 27, 1617. His body was buried on January 31st in the Leipzig Thomaskirche, where an epitaph was erected for him.

From his marriage on April 20, 1585 in Leipzig to Cecilia (* February 7, 1667 in Grimma; † February 1, 1618 in Leipzig), the daughter of the administrator of the Princely School Grimma Wolfgang Peiligk and his wife Ursula, the daughter of the councilor and Bookseller in Leipzig, Frantz Clement, have three sons and four daughters.
