Don Richard "Richie" Ashburn (born March 19, 1927 in Tilden , Nebraska , † September 9, 1997 in New York , New York ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nicknames were Whitey or Put Put .

biography

Richie Ashburn began his career as an outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies on April 20, 1948 in the National League . He spent twelve of his fifteen seasons with the Phillies. In his first year he was elected All Star , which was to be followed by four more participations. He won the title of best batsman twice in his career. 86% of his base hits were singles, which is why he was usually used as the first player in the stroke cycle, as he reached the bases very often. In 1950 he won the National League title with the Phillies, and in the World Series they were defeated by the New York Yankees . After his time in Philadelphia he played for the Chicago Cubs and for the New York Mets in their first season.

After his time as a player, he began working as a radio and television commentator for the Phillies in 1963. In 1995 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee . He died of a sleeping heart attack on September 9, 1997 at the age of 70 following a broadcast of a Phillies-Mets game.
