Life
Chiodo was commissioned in 1857 by the Piedmontese Prime Minister and Minister of the Navy Cavour to plan a naval base in the Gulf of La Spezia . In doing so, he relied on considerations and studies that had existed since the time of Napoleon . Under Chiodo's leadership, the La Spezia naval base was built between 1862 and 1869. A few years later the naval base in Taranto was built on the basis of Chiodo's plans . The modernization of the arsenal in Venice was also based on his planning work.
Chiodo represented Italy at the inauguration of the Suez Canal . He then traveled to Sudan , where he fell ill with malaria and died a little later in La Spezia.
The city erected a monument to him in front of the arsenal.
