Andijewska has lived in the west since 1943, mainly in Germany. Most of her works have been published in Munich since 1961, then in New York as special volumes in the emigrant publishing house “Sutschasnist” (The Present) .

Life

Emma Andijewska was born on March 19, 1931 in Stalino (now Donetsk). Her father was a chemist and inventor, and her mother studied agriculture. Due to frequent illnesses, Emma Andijewska did not attend school regularly and mostly studied at home. Because of the poor health of their child, the family moved to Vyshhorod in 1937 and to Kiev in 1939 . There they also experienced the beginning of the Second World War . After the Red Army recaptured the German-occupied Kiev in late 1943, Andijewska's father was executed without trial because it was feared that he would hand over his work to the Germans. Her mother fled to Germany with her children, where they lived after the war, among other things in the British occupation zone of Berlin, where Andijewska spent three years in hospital with tuberculosis of the spine. At the end of 1949 the family moved to Mittenwald and later to Munich.

In 1957 Andijewska graduated from the Ukrainian Free University in Munich with a scientific degree in philosophy and philology. The topic of her diploma thesis, supervised by Volodymyr Derschawin, was an approach to the basic questions of modern Ukrainian metrics .

In 1957 the family moved to the USA and settled in New York . Although Andijewska formally belonged to the New York group of Ukrainian literature in emigration during her time in New York, there are hardly any thematic or stylistic similarities with the group in her work. Andijewska's work, on the other hand, is assigned to Surrealism and Hermetism .

In 1959 she married the Ukrainian literary critic, essayist and writer Ivan Koscheliwetz; In 1962 she received American citizenship. From 1955 to 1995 Andijewska was the spokeswoman and editor of the Ukrainian editorial team of Radio Free Europe in Munich.

Andijewska lives and works in Munich.
