Career
Smith made his MLB debut on September 13, 1962 at the age of 22 against the Detroit Tigers . In that game he pitched 3 2 ⁄ 3 innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs . The game lost the Red Sox 6 to 14. Smith moved between the Triple-A and the MLB in 1962 and 1963 . In the Triple-A he played for the Seattle Rainiers in the Pacific Coast League (PCL). There he came to a total of 63 games, 22 wins and 26 losses . Smith played his last game in the MLB on September 28, 1963 against the Los Angeles Angels . The batsman Félix Torres tried to get both runners one base further with a bunt . Smith caught the colored ball and threw it to third base where Frank Malzone was standing and played the first out. Malzone threw the ball to Eddie Bressoud , the Red Sox's shortstop . He made the second out at second base and threw the ball on to first base where the second baseman Félix Mantilla was standing and made the third out. The Red Sox won the game 4 to 3.
