Life

The exact date of birth as well as the origin of Hafsa are unknown. It is also unknown when she got into the harem of Prince Selim , who had resided as governor in Trabzon since 1487 . She gave birth to her son Suleyman in Trabzon in 1494 . In 1509 she left Trabzon with her son for Kefe , where the prince assumed his first governorship. In 1513 - after Selim I ascended to the throne (1512) - she accompanied her son to Manisa , the administrative center of the "Prince Sandjak" Saruhan. After the death of Selim I and the accession to the throne of Suleyman I (1520) Hafsa Sultan came to Istanbul and lived there until her death on March 19, 1534. She was in oneMausoleum buried behind the Qibla wall of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque in Fatih . The mausoleum was largely destroyed in an earthquake in 1884 and rebuilt in a simplified manner at the beginning of the 20th century.

Hafsa Sultan was the first concubine to bear the title Sultan after her first name, which replaced the name Hatun .
