Volker Tannert (born March 19, 1955 in Recklinghausen ) is a German painter , sculptor and draftsman . He is one of the most important representatives of the New Wilds of the 1980s. He lives and works in Cologne, Bonn and in Liguria near Rapallo.

life and work

From 1975 to 1979 Tannert studied at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Gerhard Richter and Klaus Rinke . In 1979 he studied in New York and in the following year at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris . In 1985 he was a visiting professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt . Tannert received several art awards in his early years. He was represented in the important exhibitions in the early 1980s that dealt with wild painting , including documenta 7 in 1982. His works are in public and private collections.

In the early 1980s, Volker Tannert created several important works of New Painting, including, for example, the work Triumph des Willens , which is now in the Lenbachhaus in Munich and a second version in the Neue Galerie in Linz . Tannert, who in 1979 assisted Joseph Beuys at his retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in the construction of his works, like Beuys dealt intensively with nature and especially with landscape painting in the manner of Caspar David Friedrich . In his work there are set pieces, such as broken everyday objects, ruins or fallen trees, which should make clear the influence of humans on nature and on the climate. The human being as such only appears very rarely in his pictures. Many of his landscapes testify to the artist's decidedly pessimistic attitude.
