Carl Friedrich Theodor Harms (born March 19, 1819 in Hermannsburg ; † February 16, 1885 ibid) was a German theologian .

Life

Harms attended the Johanneum in Lüneburg and studied theology in Göttingen from 1839 to 1842 . His older brother Ludwig Harms appointed him inspector of the mission institute in Hermannsburg in 1849 , where he became the founder of the first trombone choir of the Hanover regional church in the same year . From 1857 to 1866 he was pastor at the St. Laurentius Church in Müden (Örtze) . When his brother died on November 14, 1865, Harms took over the leadership of the mission. In addition, he accepted the appointment as pastor of Hermannsburg.

When Hanover became a Prussian province in 1866 , Harms feared the union and in his sermons opposed a connection between church and state . With the introduction of civil marriage and the associated change in the wedding liturgy in 1877, there was a break between Harms and the regional church. Harms refused to use the new wedding liturgy for reasons of conscience. That is why he was deposed on February 4, 1878.

Then he founded the Hannoversche Evangelical-Lutheran Free Church with the greater part of his community and other pastors and communities in the province of Hanover ; the missionaries of the Hermannsburg Mission followed him with a few exceptions.
