Arthur Brooke (writer)
Arthur Brooke (also: Arthur Broke ; † March 19, 1563 at sea) was an English playwright and translator .
Brooke's poetry "The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet", published for the first time in 1562 , served William Shakespeare as a source for Romeo and Juliet . Brooke's story itself has models, including the story by the French poet Pierre Boaistuau with the title “Rhomeo et Julietta” , published in 1559, and presumably short stories by Matteo Bandello from 1554 and Luigi da Porto from 1530, also by the tragically lovers “Giulietta e Romeo “Acted.
