Pulkkila
Pulkkila [ ˈpulkːilɑ ] is a former municipality in Finland. It is located around 90 km south of the city of Oulu in the northern Ostrobothnian countryside .
The community has existed since 1867 and includes the parish of Pulkkila, Hyvärilä, Laakkola-Junnonoja, Latvankylä, Niilessaari, Terskanperä and Vorna. The two main settlement areas are the valley of the Siikajoki river in the north and that of the Lamujoki in the south of the municipality. The Siikajoki was dammed into the Uljuan tekojärvi reservoir in 1966 . It has an area of around 28 km². The hydroelectric power plant in the dam is operated by the Swedish energy company Vattenfall and supplies the nearby rolling mill of the Ruukki Production group with electricity. The steel processing industry is also the largest local employer.
The politics of the municipality is determined by the conservative Center Party , which has 16 of the 17 members of the municipal council.
On May 2, 1808, a battle of the Russo-Swedish War was fought in Pulkkila . A Swedish brigade under the command of Johan August Sandels won a victory over the Russian troops here and then advanced on to eastern Finland.
The parish church built by Josef Stenbäck in the neo-Gothic style in 1908-09 is well worth seeing .
At the beginning of 2009 Pulkkila merged with the municipalities of Kestilä , Piippola and Rantsila to form the new municipality of Siikalatva .
