Rantsila [ ˈrɑntsilɑ ] (Swedish historically Frantsila ) is a former municipality in northwestern Finland . It is located around 60 km south of the city of Oulu in the northern Ostrobothnian countryside .

The settlement was established in the 16th century and is named after the first lord of the village known by name, a certain Frans Erkinpoika. The political municipality has existed since 1867 and includes the villages of Kerälä, Mankila, Savaloja and Sipola in addition to the parish village of Rantsila. Around 70% of the community area is taken up by forests and swamps; Forestry and the wood processing industry are important branches of the economy.

From 1775 to 1790 Kristfrid Ganander was pastor of the Rantsila parish; During this time he created the first Finnish dictionary here and collected Finnish sagas, riddles and folk songs, which Elias Lönnrot also used in the 19th century .

At the beginning of 2009 Rantsila merged with the municipalities of Kestilä , Piippola and Pulkkila to form the new municipality of Siikalatva .
