Count Johan August Sandels (born August 31, 1764 in Stockholm , † January 22, 1831 ibid) was a Swedish officer and politician.

Life

He was Reich Governor of Norway from 1818 to 1827 and also became Field Marshal in 1824. In the Russo-Swedish War 1808-1809 he led the Finnish troops. The only victory of the Swedes during this period was the victory of Sandels on October 27, 1808 in the battle of the Virtabrücke (Koljonvirta) . This event later appeared in a number of poems by Johan Ludvig Runeberg .

In 1809 he married Ulla Elisabet Hermelin. Sandels was appointed secondary chief of the Swedish Life Guard and lieutenant general in 1812 . In 1813 he went to Germany with the Swedish army to fight alongside Bernadotte . He took part in the battle of Großbeeren and Dennewitz and was also present at the battle of Leipzig . After he went to Holstein with the army and secured Kiel, he fought in Belgium in 1814, where he took part in the siege of Maastricht . In July 1814, he commanded the 2nd Division in the invasion of Norway when Sweden annexed that country. In 1815 he retired as commander of the Swedish life guards. In 1817 he was a member of the Swedish parliament as land marshal. He was then promoted to general of the infantry in 1818 and at the same time governor of Norway. With Bernadotte, Sandels was unpopular at this time because he showed sympathy for Norway. Nevertheless, he was appointed field marshal in 1824. Sandels retired in November 1827 for health reasons and died in Stockholm in 1831.

Sandels is also a brand of beer that has been brewed by the Olvi Brewery since 1971 . Humorous stories about Colonel Sandels (and his love for beer and good food) are printed on the label on the back of the bottle.
