Carl Mörner , count since 1800 ( Swedish Carl Carlsson greve Mörner af Tuna ; born January 1, 1755 in Rödjenäs , † June 24, 1821 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish statesman and field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Carl was a member of the Swedish noble family of barons ( Swedish friherre ) Mörner af Tuna . His parents were the Swedish court hunter Carl Gustaf Mörner (1725–1787) and Margareta Fredrika, née Duse (1732–1800). Carl married Charlotta Arfwedsson (1776–1862) in 1810, the marriage remained childless.

Career

Mörner began his career in the Swedish army in 1771 as a cadet in the artillery . He completed his artillery studies in 1772 and advanced to lieutenant . In recognition of his support for Gustav III. in his putsch against the nobility in 1772 he became a Knight of the Order of the Sword . He became Gustav III's chamberlain in 1785 . and 1787 cavalier with Crown Prince Gustav Adolf . He was also promoted to captain in 1787, to major and lieutenant colonel in 1792, and finally to colonel and adjutant general as well as deputy governor of the king in 1794. In the same year he became commander of the Finnish artillery regiment and senior secretary of the North Star Order . In 1795 he switched to the Kalmar Regiment as commander and in 1798 became chief of the royal grenadier battalion.

He was raised to the Swedish count class in 1800 with primogeniture and in 1801 introduced to the count class (No. 109) of the Swedish knighthood .

He was employed as the second chief of the Svea Livgarde in 1802. Mörner rose to major general in 1808 and was then chief of the Skaraborg . In 1809 he switched to the Southern Army in Skåne as commander for a short time . After he had resumed his position as second chief of the Swedish life guard, he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1809 . In 1811 he became vice governor and military commander in Pomerania and in 1812 he was promoted to general of the infantry and became a knight of the order of Charles XIII. as well as governor in Stockholm and finally received the Order of Seraphine . In 1814 Mörner became "one of the lords of the kingdom" ( Swedish En av rikets herrar ). He became land marshal in 1815 and field marshal in 1816. From 1816 to 1818 Mörner was Reich Governor in Norway and received his departure in 1818 . For a time he was also Chancellor of Uppsala University and from 1816 to 1818 also Chancellor of Oslo University .
