Luigi da Porto
Luigi Da Porto (* 1485 in Vicenza ; † May 10, 1529 ibid) was an Italian author. He was the author of the novella Romeo and Juliet , which William Shakespeare rewrote into a drama .
Da Porto wrote the novella in his villa in Montorso Vicentino near Vicenza. The title was "Historia novellamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti" ("Newly written story of two noble lovers"), published around 1530. The origin of the story of the two unhappy lovers is disputed, with Da Porto probably through a story by Masuccio Salernitano , also called Mariotto e Ganozza, into which he introduced many new elements. These were reused in Shakespeare's drama.
Da Porto settled the story in Verona (at that time a strategically important city for Venice ), in the time of Bartolomeo della Scala (1301-1304). The names Romeus (later Romeo) and Giulietta (Juliet in English, Juliet in German) come from him. He also created the characters Mercutio, Tybalt, Laurenzo and Paris.
