Leonhard von Call

Leonhard von Call , sometimes also referred to as Leonhard de Call , (born March 19, 1767 in St. Pauls , Eppan , South Tyrol ; † February 19, 1815 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer and guitarist.

Life

After participating in the First Coalition War , where he was awarded the Prussian order Pour le Mérite , he became an official at the Imperial and Royal Chamber of Commerce in Vienna. He made music out of a hobby. At the age of 40 he married Maria Wilhelmina Brabee, who was 18 years his junior, and the marriage had 5 children.

Call von Call was a popular composer in his day. There is evidence that he had been composing since 1796, and prints of his works were published continuously from 1802 until his death in 1815. At the same time, announcements and reviews of his work appeared in the Allgemeine Musikischen Zeitung Leipzig . Many of his works were commissioned for members of the bourgeoisie and the lower nobility.

The number of his works is around 150, he composed mainly pieces for violin , flute and guitar .

reception

Calls' work is still performed today and some CD recordings of his pieces are available. The music school in his hometown Eppan has been named after him since 2006.
