Richard C. Atkinson

Richard Chatham Atkinson (born March 19, 1929 in Oak Park , Illinois ) is an American psychologist . He was Professor and Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego and then President of the University of California .

Life

Atkinson began as a professor of psychology at Stanford University . There he worked with Patrick Suppes using computers to teach math and reading to children in Palo Alto elementary schools . This resulted in the Education Program for Gifted Youth .

Atkinson then left the research career and turned to the administrative duties of a university. He became Director of the National Science Foundation and Registrar of the University of California, San Diego. From 1995 to 2003 he was President of the University of California System, succeeding Jack Peltason .

Atkinson was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , the Institute of Medicine , the National Academy of Education, and the American Philosophical Society . In his honor, which is Mount Atkinson named in Antarctica.
