Subra Suresh

Subra Suresh (born May 30, 1956 in Mumbai ) is an Indian - American engineering scientist .

Suresh graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras with a bachelor's degree in 1977 and from Iowa State University with a master's degree in 1979. He received his PhD in 1981 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1983 he became Assistant Professor , 1986 Associate Professor and 1989 Professor at Brown University . From 1993 he was Richard P. Simmons Professor at MIT and later Vannevar Bush Professor . From 2000 to 2006 he headed the materials science department and from 2007 to 2010 he was head of the engineering faculty at MIT.

In 2010 he became President of the National Science Foundation . He has been President of Carnegie Mellon University since 2013, succeeding Jared Cohon .

He deals with metallurgy, especially fatigue, thin films, nano-biomechanics (e.g. in cancer cells).

In 2012 he received the Timoshenko Medal , in 2007 the European Materials Medal, in 2008 the AC Eringen Medal and in 1985 the Presidential Young Investigator Award. In 1985 he received the Matthewson Gold Medal from the Mineral, Metals and Materials Society. In 2011 he received the Padma Shri and in 2015 the IRI Medal . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He is also a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore), the Indian Academy of Engineering, the Third World Academy of Sciences , the Spanish Academy of Sciences and Engineering, the Royal Swedish Engineering Academy, the Leopoldina and the Académie des Sciences . He is a seven-time honorary doctor.
