Lambert Ben Freund (born November 23, 1942 in Johnsburg (Illinois) ) is an American engineer.

Freund grew up on his parents' farm (the family had German ancestors) and studied mechanical engineering and mechanics from 1960 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in 1964. He then went to Northwestern University , where he worked with Jan D. Achenbach received his doctorate in 1967 (Diffraction of Elastic Waves by Semi-Infinite Plane Barriers at the Interface of Elastic Media). As a post-doctoral student he was at Brown University , where he became an assistant professor in 1969 and later a professor.

He was visiting professor at Stanford, Harvard, Caltech and Berkeley, among others.

From the 1970s he devoted himself to theoretical fracture mechanics. Later he also dealt with the mechanics of thin films including their application in microelectronics. In investigating the mechanics of such mesoscopic structures, he also applied quantum mechanics.

In 2003 he received the Timoshenko Medal and he received the William Prager Medal and the George R. Irwin Medal. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering , the National Academy of Sciences (1997) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1993).

He was editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics and, with John Willis, of the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids.

He has been married since 1965 and has three sons. His son Jonathan is a professor of mechanics and aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois.
