John Brooks Slaughter

John Brooks Slaughter (born March 16, 1934 in Topeka , Kansas ) is an American electrical engineer and former director of the National Science Foundation .

Life

Slaughter studied first at Washburn University , then at Kansas State University and received a Master's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of California, San Diego . In 1956 he began his professional career as an engineer at the defense company General Dynamics Convair , in 1960 he moved to the US Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego , where he worked for 15 years as a civilian employee in the field of human-machine interaction and software development, among other things . In 1977 he became an Assistant Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF). From 1980 to 1982 he was the first African American President of the National Science Foundation under US Presidents Carter and Reagan . From 1982 to 1988 he was Chancellor of the University of Maryland, College Park and then until 1999 President of Occidental College in Los Angeles . In 1999 he became a professor at the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California . He was also President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), whose goal is to increase the proportion of minorities in engineering, especially in universities.

In 1982 Slaughter was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). In 1993 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In addition to other awards, he received the NAE's Arthur M. Bueche Award in 2004 .

The Mount Slaughter in Antarctica was named after him.
