Besim Ömer Akalın

Besim Ömer Akalın (born July 1, 1862 in Istanbul , † March 19, 1940 in Ankara ) was a Turkish professor of medicine, pasha , member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey , director of the Turkish Red Crescent and between 1921 and 1924 the sixth Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey .

Life

Before Akalın attended the Gülhane Askeri Rüşdiyesi (German: Gülhane Military School) in Istanbul, he went to school in Kosovo. Akalın then studied medicine at the Kuleli Askeri Tip İdadisi (German: School for Military Medicine Kuleli) and at the Askeri Tıbbiye (Faculty of Military Medicine). In 1884 he completed his habilitation with the rank of captain . After various assignments at several military hospitals and a stopover in Paris for further training, he founded the first maternity clinic in Istanbul in 1892. In 1899, at the age of 37, he was awarded the title of pasha. Akalın retired in 1933. He was a member of parliament from 1935 until his death in 1940. In his honor, the University of Istanbul was closed from 11 a.m. on the day of his funeral. He was remembered on stamps of the Turkish Post Office (PTT). He is the only passenger on the Titanic who did not come on board and thus escaped the disaster. There were 2224 tickets sold but only 2223 passengers on board. He was on a trip to Europe and was on his way from France to England. Due to bad weather conditions, he arrived late in Southampton and missed the Titanic.
