The Turkish Red Crescent ( Turkish: Türkiye Kızılay Derneği ) is the largest aid organization in Turkey and, as the national red crescent society of Turkey, part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement .

The organization was founded in the Ottoman Empire on June 11, 1868. The organization received the name Red Crescent ( Kızılay ) in 1935 from Mustafa Kemal Ataturk after the founding of the Republic of Turkey . The organization's first president was Marko Pasha , of Greek descent .

history

The organization was founded in 1868 under the name "Ottoman Aid Organization for Wounded and Sick Soldiers" (Osmanlı Yaralı ve Hasta Askerlere Yardım Cemiyeti) . Some renaming followed: In 1877 "Ottoman Organization of the Red Crescent" (Osmanlı Hilal-i Ahmer Cemiyeti) ; 1923 "Organization of the Red Crescent of Turkey" (Türkiye Hilal-i Ahmer Cemiyeti) ; 1935 Türkiye Kızılay Cemiyeti . In 1947 the organization was given its current name.

The organization is led by a board of eleven members (Yönetim Kurulu) . The current CEO is Tekin Küçükali. There is also a supervisory board ( Denetim Kurulu ), a general directorate (Genel Müdürlük) and committees for women and young people. The head office of the organization is in Ankara. The organization has more than 650 branches throughout Turkey. The highest organ of the Red Crescent is the General Assembly (Genel Congress) , which is composed of delegates from the branches and the governing bodies. The General Assembly meets annually in April and takes place in Ankara.

Turkish Red Crescent Society is a humanitarian organization that provides relief to the vulnerable and those in need by mobilizing the power and resources of the community to protect human dignity anytime, anywhere, under any conditions and support the enhancement of the community's capacity to cope with disasters .

The seven principles of the organization were adopted by the XX. International Red Cross Conference in Vienna in 1965: Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntariness, unity and universality.

Activities and funding

The organization is responsible for disaster relief, organization of the blood donation service, rehabilitation measures, health education and information. The organization also grants scholarships. The organization does not receive any government support and is funded through donations, membership fees, charity events and the sale of special stamps, etc.
