Marko Pasha
Marko Pasha ( Marko Apostolidis, Greek Μάρκος Αποστολίδης ; † 1888 in Istanbul ) was an Ottoman doctor and the first president of the Turkish Red Crescent .
Marko Pasha attended elementary and middle school on the island of Syros . After that, his family moved to Istanbul, where he studied at the Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane (military medical faculty). In his senior year he was appointed head of the surgical clinic. He was the first doctor to be raised to the military rank of Mirliva . In 1861 he became Hekimbaşı of Sultan Abdülaziz . In 1871 Marko Pasha became dean of Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane. In 1878 he was appointed to the Meclis-i Ayan by Sultan Abdülhamid II . Marko Pascha was involved in founding the Red Crescent together with Aziz Bey.
Marko Pascha was known to the people as a good and patient doctor. That is why the saying anlat derdini Marko Paşa'ya ('tell your worries Marko Pascha') is still known in Turkey today .
