Matteo Ceirano

Matteo Ceirano (* 1870 in Cuneo ; † March 19, 1941 in Turin ) was an Italian automobile manufacturer , racing driver and founder of various local automobile companies.

biography

As the third son of Giovanni Battista , Giovanni and Ernesto of the Ceirano family , he also initially learned and worked in the Turin bicycle and later automobile workshop of his brother Giovanni Battista , which was known as Ceirano Giovanni Battista & C. from 1898 until it was taken over by Fiat the following year was and designed and manufactured the 3.5  hp "Welleyes", the prototype of the first Fiat car . Like the entire workforce, Matteo also moved to Fiat, but left the plant with Giovanni Battista in 1901 to set up Fratelli Ceirano & C. with him. The first years of the automotive pioneers Ceirano were very changeable and characterized by the founding of numerous, short-lived automotive companies. Matteo left the company again in 1903 and founded Ceirano Matteo & C. himself in Turin , whose name was expanded to “Ceirano Matteo & C. - Vetture Marca Itala” in 1904 and which in September of the same year became the well-known Fabbrica Automobili Itala became known under the short name Itala . In 1906, Matteo founded the Società Piemontese Automobili together with Michele Ansaldi . Ansaldi left this before the end of the First World War , Matteo followed in 1918.
