Edmund Howard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Edmund Howard (* 1478 ; † March 19, 1539 ) was an English nobleman who belonged to the old Norman noble family of the Howards . He was one of the sons of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk , as a later son but penniless and with no great career prospects. He married Joyce Culpeper , for whom this was the second marriage. For Joyce Culpeper, who came from the lower nobility, the connection with Edmund Howard was prestigious, even if he was without financial fortune. He only found a livelihood when his niece Anne Boleyn married King Henry VIII and, thanks to her mediation, he found a civil servant position in Calais .

The marriage to Joyce Culpeper was very successful. The 10th child was Catherine Howard ; Joyce Culpeper died in childbirth. Thanks to the connection between Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII, Edmund Howard's stepmother Agnes Tilney took young Catherine Howard into her household to give her an adequate education. Edmund Howard died before he could see his daughter become Queen of England.
