from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joyce Culpeper (* around 1480/81; † around 1521/25), sometimes referred to as Jocasta Culpeper , was the mother of Catherine Howard , who later married Henry VIII and thus became Queen of England.

Because of her origins, Joyce Culpeper belonged to the English nobility. Due to her second marriage to the English nobleman Edmund Howard , she was the sister-in-law of Elizabeth Boleyn and the aunt of Anne Boleyn , Mary Boleyn and George Boleyn .

Life

Joyce Culpeper was married to Ralph Legh (Leigh) for the first time. The marriage had at least five known children:

  • Isabel Leigh (* around 1495/97), ⚭ Edward Baynton, one of the largest landowners in Wiltshire
  • Margaret Leigh (* after 1496)
  • Joyce Leigh (* after 1496)
  • John Leigh (* after 1496)
  • Ralph Leigh (* after 1496; † before 1563)

Joyce Culpeper's first husband, Ralph Legh, died around 1509/10 and she married Lord Edmund Howard. For the Culpeper family this connection was prestigious, although it was only a younger and destitute son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk . The marriage, however, meant a connection to the English nobility.

Several children were born from this marriage. The exact number is not known. Count among the offspring

  • Mary Howard (* after 1515)
  • George Howard (* after 1515)
  • Henry Howard (* after 1515)
  • Charles Howard (* after 1515)
  • Catherine Howard (around 1521/25; † 1542) ⚭ King Henry VIII.
