Edric Cundell

Edric Cundell (born January 29, 1893 in London , † March 19, 1961 in Ashwell / Hertfordshire ) was an English composer, horn player, pianist, conductor and music teacher.

Cundell studied English horn at Trinity College of Music and taught there from 1914. He was active as a horn player and pianist and conducted various amateur and student ensembles. In 1935 he founded the Edric Cundell Chamber Orchestra . In 1938 he succeeded Landon Ronald as head of the Guildhall School of Music . During his tenure, which lasted until 1958, he conducted numerous student operas. In 1948 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire .

Cundell's works include a symphony in C minor, a piano concerto, a string serenade, the symphonic poems The Tragedy of Deirdre and Serbia , three orchestral suites, the Hymn to Providence for mixed choir and orchestra, the sonnet Our Dead for tenor and orchestra , a mass a cappella, a sextet for soprano, tenor, bass, violin, viola and cello, a piano and three string quartets, a rhapsody for viola or cello and piano, two pieces for wind quartet, piano pieces and songs.
