Mostly it is assumed that the family came from Tusculum . This is at least clear from a statement by Cicero in the Pro Cn speech . Plancio emerged. However, Tacitus gives a speech by the Emperor Claudius , according to which the Coruncanii come from Camerium . Hans Georg Gundel also takes into account that the Coruncanii originally lived in Camerium, then moved to Tusculum and only from there came to Rome.

The first member of the family to hold positions of influence in Roman politics was Tiberius Coruncanius , consul in 280 BC. BC, the 254 BC Became Pontifex Maximus and 246 BC. Chr. Dictator for holding elections was. From the Fasti Capitolini it is known that his grandfather and father were also called Tiberius Coruncanius.

Two members of the family (according to Polybios Gaius and Lucius, according to Pliny the Elder Publius and Tiberius) were 228 BC. Sent by the Senate to the Illyrian Queen Teuta to complain to her about the raids by Illyrian pirates on Roman ships. On departure, Teuta had the two captured, with the younger (possibly Lucius) perishing. Then the First Illyrian War broke out. Who of the two envoys as with the consul of 280 BC? Is related (son or brother) is not clear.

In the period that followed, the family only rarely appeared politically; historical evidence exists but is rare.
