Rutilus ( Latin: reddish, referring to the color) is a genus from the carp family. Their distribution area extends over Europe, West and North Asia. These are fish with an elongated body that is clearly compressed at the sides, the height of which increases with advancing age. The small mouth is terminal or below and has no barbels. The sideline is completely curved towards the abdomen. Medium to large scales cover the body.
The genus differs from the closely related and very similar genus Scardinius by the dorsal fin that begins directly above the pelvic fins and the rounded, uncut belly between the pelvic fins and anal fin.
Although they are mostly freshwater fish , some species can also live in brackish water . These populations migrate upstream at spawning time.
