The Hartert's hummingbird ( Phlogophilus harterti ), also known as the Peruvian spotted tail , is a species of bird in the hummingbird family . The IUCN assesses the population as Near Threatened .
description
The Hartert's hummingbird reaches a length of 7.2 to 7.5 centimeters and a weight of 2.2 to 2.7 grams. The sexes look the same. The short straight beak is black, the top is green. The throat, chest and center of the abdomen are white. The rest of the underside is light yellow-brown. The tail is rounded. The central control feathers are green with a broad black tip. The other control springs are yellow-brown with a wide black diagonal band. The juvenile birds resemble the adult animals. With them, the head and neck feathers have yellow-brown edges.
Occurrence
The Hartert's hummingbird occurs in central and southeastern Peru , especially in the regions of Huánuco , Pasco , Cusco and Puno .
habitat
The Hartert's hummingbird inhabits forest edges and secondary forests in the foothills of the Andes at altitudes of 900 to 1200 m.
food
The diet of the Hartert hummingbird consists of the flower nectar of epiphytes , shrubs and small trees.
Etymology and history of research
Hans Graf von Berlepsch and Jan Sztolcman described the Hartert hummingbird under the name Phlogophilus harterti , which is valid today . The type specimen came from the Branicki Zoological Museum in Warsaw. In 1860 John Gould introduced the new genus Phlogophilus . The word Phlogophilus is a combination of the Greek words "phlox φλόξ " for "flame" and "philos φίλος " for "friend". With »harterti« the authors honor the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert in recognition of his work Trochilidae from 1900.
