Torre Astura

The Torre Astura is a medieval castle on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the municipality of Nettuno , Lazio region .

Previous buildings

In ancient times, the settlement of Astura was located near the castle at the mouth of the river of the same name. During the imperial era, a villa was built on the mainland in front of today's castle. The moles of the port belonging to this property, which was probably used until the Middle Ages, can still be seen clearly in the sea.

history

After antiquity, Astura does not appear again in documentary form until 987, when the territory was donated by Benedict of Tusculum to the monastery of Sant'Alessio in Rome . But it soon came under the control of the Frangipane , who called themselves Lords of Astura from 1141 onwards.

In September the last Hohenstaufen king, Konradin , tried to disembark from Astura to Pisa after the lost battle at Tagliacozzo . However, he was arrested by Giovanni Frangipane, actually a feudal man of the Hohenstaufen, and handed over to his opponent Karl von Anjou , who had Conradin beheaded on October 29, 1268 in Naples . This ended the rule of the Hohenstaufen in Italy.

After the Frangipane, various noble families in possession of the castle broke away. In the 16th century, the Colonna rebuilt the castle to its current state.

Today the castle is in a military area, which means that access is not possible. However, due to this fact the coast was spared from urban sprawl.

In 2005, the Provincial Government of Rome applied for the Torre Astura to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
