Marechal Deodoro , officially Município de Marechal Deodoro , is a Brazilian city in the state of Alagoas . According to the 2010 census, the population was 45,977 people who are called Deodorensis. The population estimate of July 1, 2019 according to IBGE was 51,901 residents in an area of around 341 km². It has been part of the Maceió metropolitan area since 1998 .
From 1989 to 2017 it belonged to the mesoregion Leste Alagoano and there with nine other cities to the microregion de Maceió .
history
Founded in 1611 as Vila Madalena de Sumaúna , then renamed Alagoas da Lagoa do Sul and later named after Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca , the city was the capital of Alagoas from 1817–1839 before it was replaced by Maceió , 28 kilometers northeast on the Atlantic coast .
City structure
Divided into the districts of Barra Nova, Massagueira, Praia do Francês and Novo Lino, Marechal Deodoro has preserved some historical and cultural heritage. Praia do Francês has one of the better beaches in the state.
City administration
Prefect of the city has been Cristiano Matheus da Silva e Souza des Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) since 2008 , who was confirmed for the 2013-2016 term in the 2012 local elections. In the local elections in Brazil in 2016 , he was replaced by Claudio Roberto Ayres da Costa of the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) for the term from 2017 to 2020.
