Arapiraca , officially Município de Arapiraca , is the second largest city in the Brazilian state of Alagoas . According to the 2010 census, the population was 214,006 people who are called Arapiraquenser. The population estimate of July 1, 2019 according to the IBGE was 231,747 residents in an area of 345.655 km² (2016). It belongs to the Agreste metropolitan region .
The city is mainly known for its tobacco , its nickname is Capital do Fumo . Until 2017 it belonged to the mesoregion Agreste Alagoano and there with nine other cities to the microregion Arapiraca . It is around 128 km away from the capital Maceió .
history
The area was settled in the first half of the 19th century. On October 30, 1924, Arapiraca was elevated to a city, previously it was a district. Tobacco has been grown on large plantations in the region since the 1970s.
City administration
City prefect for the 2017 to 2020 term of office is Rogério Teófilo of the PSDB , who replaced his predecessor Célia Maria Barbosa Rocha of the PTB after the local elections in 2016.
The legislature rests with a city council ( Câmara Municipal ) of 18 members ( vereadores ).
Sports
The local soccer club Agremiação Sportiva Arapiraquense played in the 2010 season in the Série B , the second highest division in Brazil.
