Espeln was first mentioned in writing on April 29, 1446 in a purchase contract for the sale of a cow from the alarm clock from Espenloh to the castle kitchen in Neuhaus Castle (then Neuhaus). Espeln was first referred to as a peasantry on July 4, 1502, when the farmers from Osterloh and Steinhorst complained to the land rent master Peter von Lyns in Paderborn that the subjects of Count von Rietberg had set up a landwehr with a lockable passage on Delbrücker soil.

On April 16, 1604, Spanish mutineers passed the Espelnschlingen at the Weckerhof to reach the county of Rietberg. They had previously besieged Paderborn and withdrew after 12,000 thalers had been surrendered. They were allowed to go under secret observation. Then hotspurs opened fire on the rearguard of the Spaniards. Two distinguished soldiers - probably officers - were killed. After that, the entire Delbrück region was devastated by the Spanish soldiers. At Haspelkamp alone there were 400 dead and over 100 injured in the battle. But there were up to 700 in total.

After the soldiers extorted 1000 thalers, they moved to Rietberg.

At the beginning of the 20th century Espeln was banned from church.

The local community and citizens' association has existed in Espeln since 1920. Every year, this organizes the Great Homeland Festival and Thanksgiving Day on the 1st Sunday in September with a parade several hundred meters long. The move consists of at least 20 items (harvest wagon, hay wagon, evening wagon, children's train, minstrel trains, etc.). The king of the harvest is then determined by riding a wreath.

In the 1960s, the paths and streets were given names. Before, the houses and courtyards only had numbers.

On January 1, 1975 Espeln was umgemeindet from Ostenland to Hövelhof as part of the reorganization of the communities.
