A thrombendarterectomy (TEA) is the surgical recanalization of vessels that have been closed with an embolic or thrombotic , for example .

In a thrombus endarterectomy, the artery is exposed and opened. The thrombus is removed together with part of the inner vessel wall using a dissection spatula or ring desobliteration . If necessary, the TEA is combined with a patch plasty, in which the affected artery is widened with a plastic patch or a vein previously removed from another part of the body and cut open lengthwise.

The diseases for which TEA is frequently performed are peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAD) and stenosis of the internal carotid artery . There are four different techniques: the patch technique, the direct closure, the fork transposition and the eversion technique (EEA)
