The Rixelbruch is a nature reserve with a size of 6.36  hectares in the Riege district of the Hövelhof municipality in the Paderborn district . It is listed with the number PB-029 and was designated as a nature reserve in 1989. The area serves to preserve rare near-natural areas of an alder forest , a pedunculate oak-birch forest and moist heaths with the rare plant and animal species associated with these habitats, as well as to create ponds for the protection of animal and plant species.

location

The Rixelbruch is located around 105 meters above sea level in the Kattenheide area northwest of the Hövelhof district of Riege. The north-western border to the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is only a few hundred meters away. In the northeast, a quarry pond of around six hectares connects to the protection area, while in the east there is a fish farm . The basins of this system are fed by the Furlbach , which flows south-westerly below the Rixelbruch.

Characteristic

The Rixelbruch is a quarry alder forest on sandy soil typical of the Sennes . It owes its creation to earlier embankments of the Furlbach, which is now enclosed in solid dams. High groundwater levels are characteristic of the protection zone, the location of which is favored by a depression . Peat moss , cottongrass and cranberries are found on the permanently wet locations , some mixed with stocks of the iris . The area has a relatively large abundance of shrubs. A runoff to the Sennebach drains the area in a south-westerly direction. Smaller inland dunes lined with pine trees can be found in the drier edge zones of the protection area . Furthermore, in the south of the protected area there is a smaller piece of grassland adjoining the fracture surface.

Flora and fauna

The constantly wet locations of the Rixelbruch form a species-rich peat moss and alder quarry forest with numerous characteristic and rare plant species. The species of narrow-leaved cottongrass ( Eriophorum angustifolium ), long-lasting sedge ( Carex elongata ) and the swamp hairline ( Peucedanum palustre ) are to be emphasized .

The bird species native to the area include the long-eared owl ( Asio otus ), the coal tit ( Parus ater ) and the nightingale ( Luscinia megarhynchos ).

etymology

The term "Rixel" or "Rieksel" denotes a wood planting within an area that is shared by several courtyards. The term is derived from the Low German word "Rieke" for hedge. Such wood plantings were surrounded by a "Rieke" in order to keep the grazing cattle away from the "Rieksel".
