Apels Teich is a nature reserve with a size of 39.70  hectares in the Klausheide district of the Hövelhof community . It has the number PB-014. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1989. It represents a remnant of the original Senne landscape before the penetration of the jaw is that characterizes the Senne region for the last 300 years.

location

The almost 40 hectare protected area is located between the state road 756 and the federal motorway 33 directly adjacent to the east in the Hövelhof district of Klausheide. The border to Paderborn 's Sennelager district runs just a few meters south of the area. The Salvator-Kolleg youth home is located directly northwest of the site, while the Haustenbach connects to the north . The restricted area of the Senne military training area begins directly to the east of the A 33 and therefore only a few meters away .

Characteristic

The Apels Teich nature reserve is made up of two stagnant bodies of water in the middle of forest areas, some of which are on inland dunes , and small ponds that silt up. The western body of water, the actual “Apels Teich”, is a mesotrophic heather pond with a size of around 50 × 75 meters, created by damming a Haustenbach inflow , which is lined with reed and alder-like woody plants. It is drained in a south-westerly direction by a drain that flows into the Haustenbach after around 1.2 kilometers. The eastern body of water is a quarry pond that is still actively managed in the east, but has formed diverse vegetation areas in the west. Both bodies of water are connected by a system of ditches.

Flora and fauna

In the area of the left heather pond, the water feather (Hottonia palustris) and the king fern (Osmunda regalis) grow . The western area of the quarry pond is less overgrown, but is increasingly populated by reeds , the marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) and the marsh sedge (Carex acutiformis). The forest areas in the area are mainly made up of partly old oaks and birches , but spruce and pines are also found in places in the eastern area near the motorway .

A native amphibian species in the reserve is the pond frog (Rana kl. Esculenta), a common water bird species is the great crested grebe .

history

The area of today's Heideweiher was cultivated in the time before the First World War for the purpose of peat extraction. Today's pond with an island in the middle of the water surface was formed by French prisoners of war during the war. After the end of the war, a peace oak was planted on that island, but it should not be confused with the oak of the same name on the old Hövelhofer forester's house. The Heideweiher was first designated as a nature reserve in 1958.
