Dirk Backen (born March 27, 1960 in Satrup ) is a retired Brigadier General of the Army of the Bundeswehr . D. Backen was last employed at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg .

Military career

Education, study and first uses

Backen joined the Bundeswehr in 1978 with the training company 9/6 in Bad Segeberg . From 1978 to 1980 he was trained as a reserve officer candidate with Panzerbataillon 184 in Neumünster . Subsequently, in 1980 he began studying economics and organizational sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg and graduated in 1983 with a degree in business administration .

After completing his studies, Backen was employed as platoon leader and intelligence officer ( S2 ) with Panzerbataillon 183 in Boostedt from 1983 to 1988 . From 1988 to 1991 Hauptmann Backen served as company commander of the 2nd company of the 74th Panzer Battalion in Altenwalde . In 1991 he was employed for one year as a training and operations officer (S3) on the staff of Homeland Security Brigade 51 in Eutin .

Service as a staff officer

From 1992 to 1994 Backen completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and was promoted to major at the start of the course . From 1994 to 1996 he served as a staff officer with the head of the military intelligence department in the command staff of the armed forces (FüS II) in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . This was followed by a foreign assignment in the European headquarters (SHAPE) of NATO in Mons, Belgium . Here Backen was from 1996 to 1998 as an exercises staff officer (G3) in the Allied Command Europe Reaction Force Planning Staff (ARFPS), later Combined Joint Planning Staff (CJPS).

Back in Germany, Backen took over the post of Head of Operations (G3) in Hildesheim from 1998 to 1999 and was also Chief of Staff of Panzer Grenadier Brigade 1 . After these staff assignments, he took over a troop command with the 74th Panzer Battalion in Altenwalde from 1999 to 2001 . In this position he was Chief of Staff of the German SFOR contingent from December 1999 to June 2000 in the foreign deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

From 2001 to 2003 Backen served as a lecturer in troop leadership and was also a tutor for the national general staff course (LGAN) at the leadership academy in Hamburg. He was then transferred to Berlin , where he worked from 2003 to 2004 as a consultant in the planning staff of the Federal Ministry of Defense under the direction of Franz HU Borkenhagen . Backen remained in the ministry and served from 2004 to 2006 as adjutant to the inspector general of the Bundeswehr , General Wolfgang Schneiderhan . In 2006 Backen took part in the core seminar of the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin-Pankow . From 2006 to 2009 Backen was Chief of Staff of the 1st Panzer Division in Hanover under the command of Wolf-Dieter Langheld and Markus Kneip .

Service in the rank of general

In March 2009 he took over command of Panzerbrigade 21 in Augustdorf from Jürgen Weigt . With effect from October 1, 2009, he was appointed Brigadier General. Backen was deployed in Afghanistan from February to July 2011 . After Regional Commander North Markus Kneip was wounded on May 28, 2011 in an explosive attack (see AOR No. N321) in the governor's seat of the northern Afghan province of Takhar in Taloqan and had to be flown to Germany for further treatment, Backen took over as part of the established representation regulations during whose absence and recovery until July 29, 2011 in command. His assignment ended in August 2011. From September 2012 to August 2016, Backen took over the position of Defense Attaché at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington DC in the United States of America. Since September 1, 2016, he has been employed at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. Backen was retired in August 2017.

Backen is married and has five children. In September 2019 he started working in the federal office of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge in Kassel .
