Life

Ludwig Altenbernd was born in the Lippe community of Augustdorf near Detmold in 1818 as the son of a village teacher. At the age of just under a year he had an accident so badly that both legs were paralyzed and his back was stiffened for the rest of his life. In 1822 the family moved to Lüdenhausen . Although Ludwig was spiritually very active and versatile, his parents saw no possibility of sending their son to grammar school under the conditions at the time . Because of his disability, he was tutored at home by his father, brother, and an assistant preacher. With remarkable perseverance, he self- taught in foreign languages and mathematics and learned to play the piano. He was able to support his father in completing the written work at an early stage. After moving to Detmold, he worked as a chamber calculator for the princely government. He topped his meager salary by giving private lessons. In order to get into nature despite his disability, Altenbernd used a donkey as a mount. Here he preferred excursions to the Senne near Augustdorf, whom he knew from his childhood . He died on April 11, 1890 in Detmold and was buried in the cemetery on Weinbergstrasse. A plaque at the house where he died in Detmold, Grabbestr. 1, reminiscent of the poet. There has been a memorial stone in Augustdorf since 2007 and a path was named after it.

In 1871 a work appeared with tables for the conversion of the Lippe mass and weight into metric mass and weight, as well as for the conversion of prices , which he had developed in the course of his professional activity. Ludwig Altenbernd published his first volume of poetry in 1872 under the title Spring Blossoms and Autumn Leaves . As early as 1864 there were two translations from English, namely Virgin of the Lake by Walter Scott and Mazeppa by Lord Byron .

The volume of poems Reben und Ranken was published posthumously in 1895 . It contains a number of poems previously printed sporadically in the Lippische Landeszeitung , as well as unpublished works from the estate. In 1919 Heinrich Schwanold published a selection from his poems for the 100th birthday with an introductory biography of Altenbernd by Auguste Deppe, the poet's younger sister. Further reprints have not been made since then. Occasionally some of his poems were printed in magazines and compilations. However, his song Die Heimat , set to music by Willi Schramm, is still part of the Lippe song.
