Christa Grengel (* 1940 ) is a German Protestant theologian , senior church councilor of the EKD and ecumenist .

Life

Grengel graduated from university with a degree in Protestant theology . Afterwards she was appointed vicar of the Berlin-Brandenburg Church and after passing the second theological exam she was ordained pastor . After presentation of a dissertation for an ecumenical subject, they became the doctor of theology doctorate . At an early age she grew into the tasks of her church for interchurch and ecumenical relations. In the 1970s Christa Grengel was also active in the World Council of Churches (WCC): first in the preparatory committee for the WCC assembly in Nairobi in 1975 and until 1983 as a member of the WCC development commission. She was also instrumental in drafting the Meißen Declaration of 1988, which regulates the relations between the German Protestant churches and the Anglican Church . In a department of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR she worked to penetrate the question of peace from a Protestant perspective. She also worked as an ecumenical officer in the church chancellery of the Evangelical Church of the Union (EKU) and was appointed head of the overseas department in the church office of the EKD in 1991. In the course of her years of service she was appointed church councilor and finally senior church councilor - albeit against her stubborn reluctance. In 1994 she was adopted into retirement.

Christa Grengel, who had dealt intensively with questions of peace and justice, was interested in the work of the International Christian Peace Conference (CFK) and took part in the First and Second All-Christian Peace Assemblies , which took place in Prague in 1961 and 1964, respectively.

When the World Council of Churches held a consultation in Geneva in August 2001 and called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine , it represented the EKD's collective opinion on the Middle East issue , which was expressed in it:

“The WCC delegates decided to work more closely with regional and international partners, among other things, to boycott goods from the Israeli settlements in the West Bank, to promote the formation of an 'ecumenical monitoring team' on the ground and to coordinate joint ecumenical action in Jerusalem in particular. At an upcoming meeting of the WCC Executive Council on September 11-14, special emphasis should also be placed on 'ending the violence of the occupation in Palestine'. "

In February 2003 she represented the EKD at a meeting of the Conference of European Churches (KEK) in Berlin, when the latter adopted a sharp word in contradiction to the Anglo-American plan for a war against Iraq .
